Actually, the European Seismological Centre has included in their routine the tracking of the twitter tags #earthquake and #seismo #and related... each an earthquake occurs. Since the records of the seismographs take some time to be processed and since they sometimes are dependent of telephone communication, which usually collapse during strong earthquakes. By tag tracking earthquake-tweets seem to be a tool for a rapid roughly estimation of the epicenter location. In the February issue of the journal Science one article covered the new trends seismologist are using for a rapid response after an earthquake.
